New Full-Day Class Format!

Instructor: Rob D

What's New: Previously, this was a half-day class of shooting with a quick (and rushed) session on studio lights. This new class is a full day session broken into two parts: a morning class so that you have ample time to learn your way around a set (and construct one yourself) and then practical shooting time with a professional model.

Also, you will have 45 minutes of shooting time with your model. This gives you more than enough time to get that portfolio-worthy shot!

Description: This class will be in a professional studio location and feature three models - accounting for the higher price of this class. It will cover various aspects of lighting from strobes, window lighting, using bounces and diffusers as well as a discussion on how to create your own lighting setups.

There will be three sets, one utilizing ambient lighting, one using a single strobe and the other utilizing a set up of three strobes. Each participant is assigned to one of the three sets.

Agenda:

  • 9:00-11:30 - Class time

  • 11:30-12:30 - Lunch

  • 12:30-4:30 - Shooting

What Will Be Covered: During the class portion of the day we will cover all aspects of a studio shoot

  • Basic light setups
  • How to meter studio strobes and types of meters available
  • Setting exposure
  • Effects of different modifiers (softboxes, umbrellas, bounces, scrims, diffusers, etc.)
  • Hiring models
  • How to direct models
  • Basic set etiquette
  • How ambient light differs from strobe light
  • Buying studio lights (how to choose, what to look for, etc.)
  • Different backdrops and how to choose (seamless, muslin, cyc walls, etc.)

Who Should Attend: This class is open to anyone wishing to learn how to shoot under very controlled lighting scenarios. While this is not for rank beginners, it is also not an advanced class either. If you're looking to photograph people, then this class is an excellent learning opportunity.

Required Gear: The basic requirement is that your camera has a hot shoe. This does eliminate point & shoot cameras (sorry folks) but most hybrid cameras will have one and, of course, dSLR cameras.
